THE PARK
The Great Park
The North Shore has much less regional parkland (110 hectares) than other parts of the Auckland region:
  • South Auckland has 600% more (760 ha)
  • Rodney District has 1100% more
    (1,328 ha)
  • West Auckland has 8000% more
    (8,783 ha)
1.3 million people visit Long Bay Regional Park each year.
Long Bay is within 1 hour's drive of 1/3 of New Zealand's total population.
In a North Shore City Council survey, 86% supported the idea of a Great Park.

Why a Great Park?

To save the rural character of Long Bay Regional Park. We must stop the most popular regional park in the Auckland area from becoming just another suburban beach.

To provide a large green space for rural leisure activities, easily accessible to the whole of Auckland (by car and by bus). Attractions might include nature trails, cycle tracks, horse riding and a botanic garden.
To help protect the Marine Reserve and the public beach from pollution. Reports suggest that the environment is already being affected by nearby development.
To maintain outstanding scenic views for everybody. Long Bay Regional Park is a popular place to bring NZ and overseas visitors.
Because the North Shore does not have a large park.
Because Long Bay-Okura is the only easily accessible place where 1000 acres is available on the coast to create a Great Park. A truly unique opportunity.
