DAVID GATWARD
David Gatward passed
away on 27th November 2006.
Over the last ten years David had fought for the vision of a Great Park
at Long Bay / Okura for the people of the greater Auckland region and
had become the central driving force leading the effort as the Society's
Convenor until his ill-health last year. Without David's
leadership the Great Park cause would not be where it is today.
The Society is dedicated to continue the fight in David's
memory.
We will remember David as a visionary, a leader a teacher and a friend.

About Us
The society was formed in 1996 to convince local, regional and
central government to work together with us for the creation of
a 1,000 acre Great Park at Long Bay - Okura in North Auckland.
This area currently has over 1.3 million visitors per year.
The society has a financial membership of about 800.
We welcomed the acquisition by the North Shore City Council
of additional reserve land at the northern end of the area but are
seriously concerned about the enevitable degradation that would
result from residential and commercial developemnt along the boundary
of the remaining ARC Regional Reserve. Our efforts are concentrated
on saving the existing rural aspect and environmental values of the
present parkland. |

BETH BURNS
In memory of Beth Burns - a very early member of the Society and, I believe,
the longest serving member of our current executive committee.
Beth loved Long Bay, walking on the beach every day in rain, hail or
sunshine and she was keenly active in all aspects of the Society. Beth
collected petition signatures, and informed people about the issues of
development. She rallied people to public meetings and encouraged them to
put in submissions. Beth sold tickets to movies and the gala concert,
organised the distribution of the newsletter, particularly all those being
hand-delivered in the Torbay area, undertook or assisted with the
treasurer's role, wrote letters and attended public and Society meetings,
always with her contagious smile and sense of humour.
